Photography Gallery, Boardroom & Master Bedroom
Glenn Jowitt, Dancer from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) at Festival of the Arts, New Caledonia (2006), cibachrome print
Glenn Jowitt achieved international prominence in the 1980s with his landmark publication Images Pacifiques/Pacific Images – a book of spectacular photographs of Pacific Island people, published by Doug Owens (1986). The photographs were first exhibited at Auckland City Art Gallery in 1983, and again in Paris in 1986, also touring to Fiji. The Arts Trust has recently acquired the original suite of Ektacolor prints which made up the Auckland and Paris exhibitions of Images Pacifiques.
With great sadness the Arts Trust acknowledges the death of master photographer Glenn Jowitt on 23 July 2014. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. We also acknowledge the mighty contribution he made to many communities and cultures especially Pasifika with whom he shared so much of his life and work.
Glenn’s generosity of spirit and the loving way in which he shared his unique vision of New Zealand, the islands of the Pacific and their peoples, will live forever in his wonderful images.
The Arts Trust is currently showing 62 of Glenn’s classic and more recent images in Glenn Jowitt: Pacific Images, at the Pah Homestead until Sunday 3 August.
